OK, I know I am releasing the urge to get upset about things other people say, still this phrase is one that still gets to me sometimes, you know what I mean? I have gone so far as to give those around me permission to pop me one if that phrase comes out of my mouth. It is a limiting phrase which does not recognize the truth of the world in which we live.
This universe is one of expansion, therefore even though we may have tried something in the past which did not work the way we might have liked, sometimes a good idea has to await the right and perfect time to be put into action. Sometimes an idea is simply ahead of its time. The Miller Brewing Company released a Lite Beer in the late 1960’s. It immediately flopped, the nation was simply not interested in reduced calorie products. Now that exact same beer is the number one seller in the nation. Can you imagine what would have happened if upper management said “we have already tried that ” and allowed some other company to set the standard?
If a subordinate or co-worker comes to you with an idea, and your immediate reaction is ‘we have already tried that’, stop a moment and wonder, am I passing up the next national best seller?
Not every idea is gold mine, but many a miner has found pay-dirt in the tailings of an abandoned mine.
