I heard the inspiring Revered Guy Williams speak this weekend. He always gives me food for thought, and this time it was a line he used which seems so perfect as we think about our lives: “Just because you decorate your cell, does not mean you are free.” Now this may not be original to Rev Guy, but I give him credit for bringing it to my attention.
Think about that for a moment, just because you can decorate your cell does not make you free! How many cells have we built for ourselves through our lives? Just because we become comfortable within that cell of behavior, or job, or relationship, it does not mean we are really living to our fullest capacity. Those decorations of justification, those promises to ourselves that we are only here for a short while, the spin we put on our discomfort in the cell (or cells) is immaterial because at the end of the day, we are still prisoners. We are prisoners of thinking this is the way things have to be for us, when the truth is in freedom there are no walls at all!
We do not have to immerse ourselves in what others believe would be best for us, we do not have to surrender our dreams because those around us are afraid to live their own dreams. We are honestly not tied to anyone else’s idea of what our lives must be, until and unless we choose to pull the cell door closed, lock the door, and throw away the key, and settle for hanging a beautiful painting on the wall and calling it life. You are a powerful creator who is needed by the world to make it a better place. Please do not forget that. Your dreams exist for a reason even if others consider them foolish.
