The reason we are happy is because we choose to be happy. Happiness isn’t about a song or a another person, or the balance in our bank account. All those things can be present in glorious abundance, but it doesn’t mean we will be happy. Happiness is an inside job; inside ourselves.
When we look to the external to define for us what happiness is, we make happiness a conditional experience. What happens when we have heard the song enough times and tire of it? How will we feel when that special person leaves our lives? Can we still be happy when the bank calls us about an overdraft? Yes, we can still be happy no matter what occurs if we choose to be happy. This is not to say a bounced check should send us into gales of laughter, or if our beloved finds another place to be we expect to be jumping for joy. However, if we begin with the true knowing that happiness is an inside job, even these things can be simply another item to take care of.
And here is another aspect of happiness we want to remember: when we are happy as ourselves we draw to us even more reasons to be even happy. So it is your choice: make your happiness conditional based upon external events or know that the reason you are happy is because, you are happy.
